Pomar de Burgos

Ribera del Duero

Pomar de Burgos is the brand name that represents the best wines from Bodega Pomar Vinedos, S.L.  The first Pomar family appeared in Ribera del Duero more than 300 years ago and since that time generations of the Pomar family have been dedicated to the cultivation of vines and production of wines.  In fact, they still own some artisanal bodegas that they keep as a nostalgic souvenir of other times, one of them is “La Bonda” the most peculiar and deepest cellars of Valdezate.

The modern Bodega was born in 1999 and is located in the Provincia de Burgos, right in the heart of the Ribera del Duero, 15 km from Peñafiel (Valladalid), 8km from Roa (Burgos) and 20km from Aranda de Duero.  The three localities that form the triangle where the best wines of the Denominacion de Origen are produced.
The vineyards are at an altitude of 2500 feet and receive an average of about 14 inches of rain per year.  The climate of the area is continental with a light Atlantic influence.  The winters are long and cold and the summers very hot.  However, the big variation of temperatures between the day and night provides for a slow maturation of the grapes which produces good acidity, combined with a low production per hectar, resulting in a wine that has a good body.

Pomar de Burgos wines are made from Tinta del Pais, the local name for Tempranillo, that is grown in there own family vineyard of 28 hectares (69 acres).  They practice green harvesting to limit production and to obtain superior quality grapes with high sugar content.  The total production averages about 125,000 kg., a low yield of 4500 kg per hectare.  The soil is mostly calcareous with some sand.  The average age of the vines is 20 years old, but they have various vineyards with vines that are more than 40 years old; the grapes from these are used for the Reserva.  The Bodega uses modern technology and machinery and stainless steel vats, etc.  Aging is done in both French and American oak barrels
